About 243 passengers were on board the Los Angeles-Chicago train when it came off the tracks at a rail crossing near the town of Mendon.

A police spokesman said that 6 helicopters were pressed into service to take the injured to the hospital. More than 20 agencies including fire brigade, police, ambulance service, medical helicopter service are engaged to help the injured. The first emergency team reached the spot within 20 minutes to help the victims. A passenger, Robert Nightingale, told that he was sleeping in his sleeper room when the crash happened. After the incident, the train derailed and many of its coaches overturned, leaving passengers trapped in it.

Boys Scout team helped

Nightingale said that as soon as the collision happened, the train was hit hard, all the passengers fell down from the seat with a strong jolt. A team of Boys Scouts was also traveling in this train, in which there were a total of 16 students but incidentally none of the scouts got hurt. After the incident, the same Boys Scout took the injured passengers out of the train, put them on the train and helped them to reach the hospital.
